The German Institute for Development Evaluation (Deutsches Evaluierungsinstitut der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit; DEval) is mandated to evaluate the performance of German development cooperation interventions.
Through its evidence-based evaluations and related work, DEval provides greater transparency about German development cooperation. The institute supports the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to enhance its development cooperation policy making and ultimately to increase the effectiveness and impact of development interventions by Germany’s implementing organisations and NGOs.
DEval also provides the hard evidence and recommendations to the German Bundestag and thus supports it in performing its parliamentary role of scrutinising the work of the executive.
With their Competence Center for Evaluation Methodology, they review, develop and innovate evaluation approaches, methods and standards as integral part of their ongoing work. The institute also promotes evaluation capacity development (ECD) in partner countries of German development cooperation and builds strategic partnerships with academia, research organisations, think tanks and others.
