Girls For A Change (GFAC)

Girls For A Change (GFAC) was established in 2000 and attained nonprofit status in 2004 with the mission of empowering young women by involving them in the design, leadership, funding, and implementation of social change projects that address issues affecting girls in their own communities.

Since 2013, GFAC has placed a deeper focus on the empowerment and upliftment of Black girls—a population whose needs often go unmet. As both an organization and a movement, GFAC views this intentional focus as a critical first step in confronting the prejudice, poverty, and lack of resources that leave Black girls and young women marginalized in society.

Through its programs, GFAC enables participants to effect change by leading social change initiatives while simultaneously developing skills in problem-solving, policy advocacy, and movement building. GFAC programs emphasize leadership development, goal-setting, financial literacy, community engagement, skill-building, network development, exposure to new opportunities, sisterhood, and social-emotional learning. The organization also addresses systemic challenges such as institutional racism, sexism, the digital divide, and barriers to advancement—what for many Black girls is not just a glass ceiling, but a concrete one.

GFAC offers consistent, long-term support for girls from youth into young adulthood and beyond, including outreach initiatives for middle and high school students. By combining experiential learning with continuous exposure to new experiences and opportunities, GFAC aims to ensure that girls stay ahead of the learning curve, break generational cycles, and close opportunity gaps. The organization’s ultimate goal is to ensure that every girl—particularly Black girls who are often disadvantaged, marginalized, or underrepresented—is seen, heard, and celebrated.

While GFAC’s primary focus is on Black girls, all girls are welcome to participate in its programs, in alignment with its broader vision of inclusivity and empowerment for every girl.
