Global Health Advocates (France)

Global Health Advocates is a non-governmental organization that focuses on engaging all sections of society to fight diseases that disproportionately affect people living in poverty, and are also the leading causes of people living in poverty. In particular, Global Health Advocates works towards the formulation and implementation of effective public policies to fight disease and ill health. Established in September 2001 in Switzerland (and officially registered in France since 2008), GHA works in France and with the EU institutions to increase political and financial support for the development and the fight against poverty. GHA France is a founding member of ACTION and Action for Global Health. They are based both in Paris and in Brussels. Mission In partnership with civil society, their mission is to carry out political advocacy to ensure policies and resources are effectively addressing health inequalities. GHA's actions concentrate on the following areas: - Ending the TB, HIV, Malaria epidemics - Investing more in global health policies - Improving child health through immunization and nutrition GHA also works with its partners in the global South to increase their advocacy capacities. Work: GHA in France In France, GHA has been working since 2009 on supporting and defending Overseas Development Assistance (ODA) and global health budgets. They are a member of Coordination Sud and lead its European Committee. GHA also helped create the Collectif Santé 2015, which gathers 8 associations calling on the French government to safeguard aid for global health. Moreover, they work specifically with MPs by: - Organising study visits in the countries most affected by diseases of poverty; - Organising conferences, round tables, and seminars; - Providing material for evaluating public policies. GHA at EU Level GHA's Brussels office develops recommendations on EU policies that have the potential to help the world reach equitable access to health. They specifically look at how EU Research policies can better deliver societal impact for its citizens, especially in the area of health and access to medicines. They look at trends in EU development policies, and how they likely affect EU support to global health and nutrition. Their current work is focusing on the recent shift in focus towards migration and security activities as well as the increasing involvement of the private sector in development cooperation. They also coordinate the TB Europe Coalition, a regional network of 200 civil society advocates and activists who are working towards increasing the bottom-up community response to the biggest infectious disease killer in the WHO Europe region. GHA at Global Level At the international level, GHA is a member of the CSO steering committee of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. They are also the representative of Northern associations in IHP+, lead the NGO delegation on TB at UNITAID, and are a member of the Generation Nutrition Steering Committee as well as its branches in France and Brussels. GHA sits on the Steering Committee of OAFRESS, Francophone Africa's Association for Reinforcing Health and Vaccine Systems, and is a member of the Stop TB Partnership. In Southern countries, GHA works with its partners to strengthen domestic advocacy in favour of an increase and better monitoring of health budgets.
