In 1971, in response to Premier Zhou Enlai's call for "strengthening the prevention and treatment of chronic chronic inflammation and pulmonary heart disease", the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University established a "chronic chronic inflammation prevention and treatment group" (the team's research results won the National Science Conference Award in 1978). In 1979, the "Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Diseases" was established on this basis, becoming one of the earliest research institutions for respiratory diseases in China. In August 2017, the Guangzhou Institutional Establishment Committee agreed to change its name to “Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Health” (hereinafter referred to as Huyan Institute). From the beginning of the fight against SARS in 2003 to the treatment of patients with severe H5N1, H1N1, H7N9, H5N6, and MERS influenza, the Research Institute has accumulated a lot of talents and bravely chosen to fulfill its commitment to serve the society with practical actions.
Under the leadership of Academician Zhong Nanshan, the leading research institute, the Institute adheres to the close combination of basic research and clinical medicine, and constantly develops and innovates. After long-term condensing, Huyan Institute gradually formed a stable and distinctive research direction, focusing on four areas of major respiratory infectious diseases and lung injury, bronchial asthma and chronic cough, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung tumors. Its strategic positioning is to meet the major needs of the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases, aiming at the forefront of clinical and basic research in the field of international respiratory diseases, and consolidating and cultivating a team of innovative scientists at home and abroad in the field of respiratory disease-related research. Huyan Institute has now established the National Respiratory Diseases Clinical Medical Research Center, the National Clinical Drug Testing Institution (Respiratory Specialty) and five national clinical key specialties (Respiratory Medicine, Intensive Medicine, Allergic Disease, Oncology and Thoracic Surgery) and one National key construction discipline (Chinese and Western Medicine Respiratory).
Today, Huyan Institute has more than 350 beds, and the State Key Laboratory covers an area of 12,800m 2. It currently has 558 employees, including 120 clinicians, 105 scientific researchers, 320 nursing staff, and 13 management staff; doctoral degree or above 84 people, 92 people with deputy senior title and above.
