HISTORY
Donald T. Goldberg and William S. Zoino, two colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, founded GZA in 1964 as Goldberg Zoino and Associates. With its first office in Cambridge, Massachusetts, GZA maintained a steady growth in geotechnical engineering through the mid-1970s. During this time, the firm moved to Newton, Massachusetts and expanded further into New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
During the 1980s, the firm’s environmental business grew along with the rest of the environmental services industry, eventually accounting for nearly two-thirds of the company’s total business. In 1986, GZA created subsidiaries to conduct environmental remediation and specialty drilling services.
In 1989, GZA became GZA GeoEnvironmental Technologies, Inc. and became a publicly traded company (on NASDAQ as GZEA) with the expectation of expanding its remediation engineering and construction capabilities, and expanding its presence to the Southeast and Southwest areas of the country.
In 2000, senior management and employees, believing that GZA would be more successful over the long-term as a private company again, repurchased and refocused the company, returning it to a privately-held consulting firm operating primarily out of the Northeast.
Since then, GZA has seen great success in its traditional locations and services, and has grown successfully in new locations and through expansion of our technical services. Today, the company provides services in five core areas: geotechnical, environmental, ecological, water and construction management. Our staff consists of approximately 550 technical and administrative professionals in 26 offices in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, the Appalachian and Great Lakes Regions.
The company continues to live by the values instilled by Don and Bill: respect, trust and concern for the well-being of every individual in the company; accountability; leadership; client advocacy; technical excellence; and innovation in our approach to meeting our clients’ needs - and is focused on continuing to evolve and thrive in the decades to come.
