Heineken Africa Foundation

In 2007 Heineken launched the Heineken Africa Foundation to support the improvement of health for people living in sub-saharan African communities by financially supporting relevant health projects and health-related education. Underpinning Heineken long-standing commitment to Africa, projects are carried out in countries in which Heineken is operating. At the creation of the Heineken Africa Foundation, Heineken made € 10 million available and in 2010, Heineken donated an additional € 10 million to the foundation. Since it concerns an endowment fund, the Heineken Africa foundation can spend an annual amount of approximately € 1 million on health projects in Africa as of 2010. The Heineken Africa Foundation works in partnership with Heineken, its subsidiaries in sub-saharan Africa and non-governmental or governmental organisations (NGOs or GOs). For each project, a tripartite partnership is set up whereby the foundation provides funding, the local subsidiary supports through means of manpower, expertise and monitoring and the NGO or GO ensures final implementation and integration in the relevant public health system. At Heineken headquarter level, various departments provide expertise and human resources, for example when setting and monitoring medical indicators (health department), drafting contracts (legal department), dealing with financials (finance and tax), engaging subsidiaries (regional office) and communicating through various channels (corporate relations). The salary of the Heineken Africa foundation manager is also largely paid for by Heineken. The combined efforts of the private sector partner (Heineken), the NGOs (Heineken Africa Foundation and local partnering NGOs) and the public organisations (local) governments and community organisations), offer a strong basis for sustainable healthcare development and improvement in sub-saharan Africa Where They Work Burundi DRC Ethiopia Namibia Nigeria Rwanda Sierra Leone South Africa
