Helwan University was established upon the presidential decree issued on 26 July 1975. However, it goes back to the 19th century during the reign of Mohamed Ali who established "The Operations School". The fields of that school were the basis of many institutes that formed Helwan University later.
Establishing Helwan University was a landmark in the history of higher education in Egypt. In the beginning of the last century, higher education was limited to theoretical sciences in arts, law and economy. Gradually, empirical sciences of engineering, medicine, pharmacy and agriculture constituted growing fields of study in Egyptian universities on a theoretical basis rather than an applied or practical one. Handcrafts and applied fields remained for a long while out- campus until the establishment of Helwan University as a leap in higher education, applied arts and sciences.
