About

HNI is a global development organization dedicated to bringing the benefits of technology to individuals and organizations working in the developing world. They work across all sectors to promote the free flow of information between vulnerable groups and the humanitarian and development professionals dedicated to helping them.

HNI was co-founded by two brothers, David and Andrew McAfee, who sought ways of working at the intersection between International Development and Information and Communication Technology. The Articles of Incorporation, Bylaws and Washington, D.C. Certificate of Incorporation for HNI are available here.

Where They Work

Headquartered in Washington, D.C., HNI supports thousands of partners in more than 100 countries to leverage Information and Communication Technology for Development. Overseas, they work through HNI staff based in Democratic Republic of Congo, England, Ghana, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.

Mission and Values

HNI’s mission is to provide organizations and individuals the opportunity to use information and communication technology (ICT) in innovative, productive, and sustainable ways.

As a foundation for all that they do, HNI upholds the following core values:

  • Entrepreneurship – They take risks, have a bias towards action, and accept full responsibility for outcomes.
  • Partnership – They are catalysts, creating productive ecosystems: interdependent partners who work towards the same objective.
  • Bottom line focus on results – They prioritize measurement required to demonstrate effectiveness.
  • Sustainability – They focus on the question, “What remains after HNI leaves?” and design their projects to be financially self-sustaining.
  • Self-help – They provide new opportunities that allow people to help themselves.

What They Do

HNI specializes in three important areas of Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D): Mobile Data Collection services for development professionals, On-demand search engines for simple mobile telephones and Mobile-to-Mobile Surveys to survey local populations and interview key informants.

Working public- and private-sector partners, HNI helps millions of people worldwide to get the answers they need to lead healthy, productive lives.
