Humanity United
Humanity United is a foundation dedicated to bringing new approaches to global problems that have long been considered intractable. They build, lead, and support efforts to change the systems that contribute to problems like human trafficking, mass atrocities, and violent conflict.
Humanity United believes that people are all united in the challenges and opportunities that people face. To that end, the organization lead and invest in a wide-range of efforts, networks, organizations and ideas that share their vision of the world. Their partners work with us to build peace, promote justice, end atrocities and advance human freedom.
In order to comprehensively address the issues Humanity United seek to solve, the organization employ a combination of grantmaking, direct impact activities and advocacy, which are enabled by the organization's distinct organizational structure as a grantmaking private foundation, a social welfare organization* (501(c)(4)), and a 501(c)(3) public charity.
Humanity United is part of The Omidyar Group, which represents the philanthropic, personal, and professional interests of Pierre and Pam Omidyar.
Humanity United's Work
Building Peace
Humanity United leads and supports in-country, regional and international efforts that restore peace and security, prevent atrocities and enable sustainable change. To achieve this, they employ a combination of network building, direct engagement activities and grants. They work directly with civil society, the international community and the U.S. government to develop and support a robust, global peace and security architecture. Through their advocacy efforts, they help shape and strengthen policies, strategies, and legislation that can better enable peace and stability. They also support and seek innovative efforts to prevent and respond to mass atrocities around the world and support international justice.
They currently work in some of the most conflict-ridden and fragile countries in the world – The Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, South Sudan and Sudan.
Advance Freedom
To advance human freedom, they lead and support international and national efforts to combat modern-day slavery. They do this by building effective networks to address this issue, strengthening and supporting the anti-slavery advocacy movement, raising awareness, encouraging sustained governmental leadership on the issue, and engaging the private sector to become part of the solution.
In 2007, they launched the Alliance to End Slavery and Trafficking (ATEST), with the goal of building a coalition that could speak in a unified voice for solutions to prevent and end all forms of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Today, ATEST is comprised of several member organizations that actively advocate for legislative and policy solutions while amplifying the voice of survivors.
Humanity United is a founding partner of The Freedom Fund, the world’s first private donor fund designed to raise and deploy $100 million or more to combat modern-day slavery.
