Huru International was founded in 2008 with a simple vision for a world where no girl misses school because of her period. Menstruation and education are inexorably linked and complicated by poverty, gender inequity and misinformation about menstruation and the female body.
Huru has since produced over 1.3 million high-quality sanitary pads, keeping over 165,000 girls and young women in school. In order to empower young women struggling to find formal employment, Huru launched its Skills Transfer Program in 2018.
Their Mission
Their mission is to keep the most vulnerable girls in Africa’s marginalized communities in school by providing reusable menstrual pads in conjunction with sexual and reproductive health education and life skills workshops, also known as the Huru System.
Their Solution: The Huru System
The Huru System combines the distribution of their Huru Kits alongside their comprehensive health education to adolescent girls and young women. Huru Kits are distributed at community and school events led by Huru-trained facilitators.
