Sectors

Agriculture

In the field of Agriculture, iDC has been involved in a number of activities. The company developed a handbook on extension communication for front-line agricultural extension workers of Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture.

The company also ran workshops on extension communication methods for Ministry of Agriculture staff engaged in the pilot phase of the On-Farm Grain Storage Project (OFGSP) in Nyanza and Western Provinces.

Environment

iDC has worked with various organisations dealing in environmental management such as Kenya's National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) the Arid Lands Resource Management Project (ALRMP) and the Western Kenya Community Driven Developement and Flood Mitigation Project (WKCDD&FMP).

In the early 1990s iDC played a big role in the pilot phase of the Arid Lands Resource Management Project by implementing the Community Participation Training Package in Mandera and Wajir Districts.

In addition, iDC has assisted environmental organisations in areas such as the design of project implementation plans, communication strategies, monitoring and evaluation and so on.

Health: Sound management systems

In Health, iDC consultants have had broad experience. They have participated in projects that, in the early 1990s, designed and installed a District Health Management System for the Kenya Ministry of Health –and then adapted it for use at the facility level. They were involved in formulating policy and capacity building approaches related to the District Health Management Boards. They designed and implemented a training programme for the MoH Maintenance Project for Rural Health Facilities and produced numerous training materials for the Aga Khan Health Service.

Water

In Water, iDC has participated in various related interventions such as the formulation and writing of Uganda’s Water Action Plan and the formulation of projects for handing over of water management to community groups in the rural areas of Kenya.

Also, iDC facilitated a series of workshops for the management staff of the Kenya Water Institute (KEWI). In light of the institute’s reformulated strategy and business plan, the main task was to develop a new, competency-based and modular curriculum; they assisted in the formulation of the main phase of the Water Users Associations Support Programme (WUASP). The formulation process involved the facilitation of a series of district-level stakeholder workshops – and a final planning workshop at the national level.

Recently, iDC carried out the Mid-Term evaluation of a water and sanitation project in Puntland state in Somalia funded by the EU - the North East Water and Sanitation Project (NEWS). The project aims at improving households’ livelihoods in the rural areas through integrated management of their water resources and sanitation.
