The principal object of Inkululeko (as set out in its memorandum of incorporation) is “…to carry out Public Benefit Activities in South Africa by promoting an open, accountable and just democracy (as contemplated in clause 1(j) of Part I and Part II of the Ninth Schedule to the Income Tax Act); and promoting access to media and a free press [capable and worthy of performing this duty] (as contemplated in clause 1(q) of Part I and Part II of the Ninth Schedule to the Income Tax Act), by developing investigative journalism in the public interest, transferring investigative skills to other journalists, helping to secure the information rights needed by investigative journalists to do their work and ensuring wider access by the general public to the work of investigative journalists”.
