The Insight Center is a national racial and economic justice organization working to ensure that all people become and remain economically secure. Through research and advocacy, they expose hidden truths to unearth and address the root causes of economic exclusion and racial inequity.
They are one of the few national, Black-led, economic-focused organizations that centers its work on race, gender, and place.
At the core of their work is a focus on racial equity. Specifically, they:
- Conduct groundbreaking research to ignite systemic change
- Produce powerful tools and resources to shift narratives in order to build political and public will for transformative change
- Advocate for policies that address economic exclusion and racial and gender inequities
- Bridge the gap between academia and activism
Their current priority areas advance wealth as the “North Star” of economic security, connecting income, work, housing and other economic issues. Their priorities are:
- Uncovering the drivers of racial and gender inequity within workforce systems and institutions
- Leading innovative narrative change processes to interrogate their current understandings of deservedness and worth that are based on anti-blackness
- Incubating local narrative change efforts through arts and culture
- Increasing understanding of how the rules of their economy are driving labor market changes and affecting working people of color in order to inform local campaigns and policy agendas
- Identifying and dismantling the ways in which their criminal legal system contributes to wealth stripping and economic barriers for people of color
- Using the Family Needs Calculator for the state of California (describing how much income is needed to meet basic needs) to advance a suite of economic policy ideas that bolster income and alleviate poverty.
