HISTORY

Shortly after its national sovereignty, Côte d'Ivoire sought to curb tropical pandemics and effectively fight against diseases such as tuberculosis, mental illness, sexually transmitted diseases, malnutrition which is gaining ground in peri-urban areas blow a real brake on its development, will feel the need to create a health institution.

This is how the 1969-70 decennial outlook was to be realized in early 1970, namely the need for an institution capable of developing public health research adapted to the needs of the population. specific conditions of the country in the form of a social medicine plan and charge to design a training of health and non-medical personnel able to participate effectively in new health operations named: INSTITUTE NATIONAL DE LA SANTE PUBLIQUE (INSP).

Funded by the European Development Fund (EDF) and the Ivorian government, the land exit of the buildings and the installation of fixed and mobile equipment of the INSP will be final at the beginning of the year 1970. The INSP covers an area of twelve (12) hectares and located in the center of Abidjan between the towns of Plateau and Adjamé. Administration, design and information activities begin in February 1969, while those related to the public will take place later in October-November of the same date.

It is finally on February 26, 1969 that the INSP will be inaugurated by his Excellency Mr. Felix Houphouet BOIGNY in the presence of Mr. Hippolyte AYE then Minister of Public Health and Population.

The National Institute of Public Health of Côte d'Ivoire is housed in Abidjan, in the heart of the economic capital. It is located on the Nangui Abrogoua Boulevard, at the interface of Adjamé and Plateau communes.

Created in 1970, the National Institute of Public Health is governed by Law No. 79-606 and Decree No. 79-607 of July 26, 1979 establishing it as a civil personality, and National Public Establishment (EPN) by Decree No. 83-245 of 29 March 1983. Decree No. 91-651 of 9 October 1991 determines the attributions, organization and functioning of the National Institute of Public Health.

 

As part of its public health service mission, the INSP is responsible for:

  • training in public health and community medicine
  • biomedical and social health research
  • health service provision (in support of training and research)
  • monitoring of activities and evaluation of the impact of health programs and projects on populations.
  • participate in the study of public health problems and seek appropriate forms of health action for their solution;
  • participate in the development, monitoring and evaluation of the impact of national public health programs and projects;
  • train and retrain in public health all persons contributing to the health and social protection of the population;
  • undertake research in public health of a medico-social and community nature;
  • provide public health advice to public authorities (municipalities, general councils ... etc).
