The Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) is an independent research organisation concerned with policies affecting the environment in Europe and beyond.
Its aim is to disseminate knowledge about Europe and the environment and to analyse and present policy options. Its focus on European policy making is shared by few and it has a reputation based on being first in the field and possessing a history of knowledge and involvement acquired over thirty years. It undertakes research and consultancy on the development, implementation and evaluation of environmental and environment-related policies in Europe.
Its research work involves both pressing short-term policy issues and long-term strategic studies. Its project portfolio varies from year to year but itis committed to being at the forefront of thinking about the environmental aspects of EU policies and keeping an open dialogue with policymakers and stakeholders. It works closely with the full range of policy actors from international agencies and the EU institutions to national government departments, NGOs and academics.
IEEP has an interdisciplinary staff including lawyers and natural and social scientists with experience in several European countries. It is a charity with offices in London and Brussels and a network of partners in other European countries. The London office of IEEP was founded in 1980, the Brussels office in 2001. A presence was established in Finland in 2008.
Work Areas
The Institute has several research areas covering a wide range of European and related national policies.
Agriculture & Land Management
IEEP is concerned with securing the environmentally sustainable use of land and natural resources in Europe through rigorous and well established contributions to inform the relevant policy debates.
Climate Change & Energy
Our work aims to guide and influence the development of this policy area - to push for ambitious, environmentally responsible and sustainable policies that, crucially, do not conflict with other environmental objectives.
Environmental Economics
The aim of our work is to make the value of the environment understood, to better integrate it into policies, measurements, assessments and economic policy instruments.
Industrial Pollution
Our work aims to deliver effective regulatory regimes and supporting administrative structures to help reduce the adverse impacts of industrial activity on the environment, including pollution to air, water and land.
Water, Marine & Fisheries
Our work on water, marine and fisheries policies focuses on the development and implementation of relevant EU legislation which would result in environmental benefits.
Resource Use, Waste & Chemicals
IEEP's work on resource use and waste contributes to the analysis and development of better policy and legislation, to reduce its environmental impact in Europe.
Biodiversity
Our biodiversity work aims to promote and contribute to the development of EU policies that maintain, restore and enhance biodiversity and associated ecosystem services.
Global Issues & External Action
Our work aims to stimulate wider analysis and debate on the external dimension of EU policies regarding the environment and sustainable development.
Governance
The environmental governance team covers strategic questions and examines the mechanics and processes behind the formulation and implementation of environmental policies.
