The Institute of Statistical Science is the leading scientific research agency of the General Statistics Office, established under Decision No. 02 / TCTK-TCCB dated January 3, 1976 of the Director General of the General Statistics Office. The institute is part of a network of research institutes managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology. In 1996, the Institute of Statistical Science was classified as a Type 1 Institute of the State (According to the Decision No. 782 / QD-TTg dated October 24, 1996 of the Prime Minister).

Over the past 30 years, the Institute of Statistics has organized research on nearly 300 scientific topics, including 4 state-level projects, over 100 projects at the General Department level. The research content focuses on the following directions: Building and perfecting the statistical information system; methods of collecting, processing and analyzing statistics; build and standardize catalog tables; methods of calculating general statistical criteria, productivity, quality and efficiency criteria, assessing the impact of science and technology on economic development; standardization of statistical information and terms; research, application of mathematics and informatics in statistical work ... in order to meet the management requirements of each period and step by step approach the international statistical level. The Institute has directly organized or participated in many professional surveys at all stages from design,

The Institute has a staff of 31 people, including 1 associate professor, 3 doctors, 4 masters and a large team of research workers inside and outside the industry. The Institute has its own seal and account, operating under the certificate of registration of scientific and technological activities No. 337 issued by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (now the Ministry of Science and Technology) on 17 / October 1994.
