About

The Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP), is a scientific and technological research institution designed to achieve the sustainable development of the Amazonian population, with an emphasis on the rural, specialized in the conservation and correct use of natural resources in the Amazon. Amazon region. It carries out its activities in a decentralized manner, promoting institutional participation and organized civil society.

It was created in 1981 through Law No. 23374, following the mandate of Article 120 of the Political Constitution of Peru of 1979, being ratified in 2004 by Law No. 28168, which grants it the status of internal public law, as well as autonomy economic and administrative.

It is structured into six research programs that contribute to the management, sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity, as well as knowledge of socio-diversity and the Amazonian economy. The research programs are: Amazonian Biodiversity (PIBA), Integrated forest management and environmental services (PROBOSQUES), Use and conservation of water and its resources (AQUAREC), Climate change, territorial and environmental development (PROTERRA), Cultural diversity and economy amazonian (SOCIODIVERSITY), and finally, Information on Amazonian biodiversity (BIOINFO).

Through these Programs, the IIAP develops research, evaluation and control of natural resources, promoting their rational use and promoting economic activities that allow the sustainable development of rural communities settled in the Peruvian Amazon.

It has a main office in Loreto and decentralized bodies in the Amazonian regions of Peru, in Loreto, Ucayali, San Martin, Madre de Dios, Amazonas and Huanuco, as well as a coordination office in the city of Lima.

Scope of action

The jurisdiction of the IIAP extends throughout the geographical area of ​​the Amazon basin of Peru in the departments of Amazonas, San Martin, Loreto, Ucayali, Huanuco, Madre de Dios, and jungle and flat Amazonian areas of the other departments. It covers an approximate area of ​​760,000 km2, more than 60% of the national territory. It has a main office in Loreto and decentralized bodies in the main Amazonian regions of Peru.

Mission

Generate and provide knowledge about the biological and socio-cultural diversity of the Peruvian Amazon, for the benefit of the population, which are relevant, efficient and reliable.

Vision

Generate and incorporate knowledge, innovative technologies and ancestral knowledge, at the service of Amazonian societies and ecosystems.

Institutional strategic objectives

In order to achieve the mission of the IIAP in generating scientific knowledge and environmental technological innovation, two Institutional Strategic Objectives (OEI) were established, as follows:

1. Develop sustainable production systems based on the resources of the Amazonian biological diversity used by producers.

2. Increase technical proposals for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, hydrobiological resources, and Andean-Amazonian forests for use by development bodies.
