The National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewerage is a dependency created by Law 5994, in 1962, with the purpose of fully satisfying the needs and demands of the urban, peri-urban and rural population of the country located in its area of operational jurisdiction, with drinking water services of adequate quality from the physical-chemical, bacteriological and organoleptic point of view, reliable, continuous, with adequate pressures, with full coverage, at reasonable costs and in the quantity necessary to meet the rational consumption of the population, as well as the service of collection, transport and final disposal of sewage, without causing negative impacts on health or the environment, and contributing to the improvement of the levels of well-being, health and development.
The main functions performed by the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewerage are:
-Direct and monitor the provision of a drinking water service, as well as the disposal and treatment of wastewater, determining the priority of the construction, expansion, exploitation and administration of the drinking water and sewage systems.
-Maintain and operate the drinking water, sanitary and storm sewer services, with consultation being mandatory and compliance with their obligations inexcusable.
-Prepare or approve plans for public and/or private hydraulic works, related to potable water and sewage systems.
-Take advantage of, use and monitor all waters in the public domain, in the demarcations under the jurisdiction of INAPA, according to the law that regulates it.
