iDE is an international nonprofit organization unleashing the power of innovation and market forces for poor rural households in the developing world, helping them access tools and knowledge to increase their income. iDE currently operates programs in Nepal, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Vietnam, Zambia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Nicaragua and Honduras.
The organization employs 595 staff and had a budget of $20 million in 2011. With funding from more than 160 donors, iDE has implemented over 250 projects worldwide.
iDE works in both smallholder agriculture and water and sanitation.
iDE develops and refines low-cost micro-irrigation technologies (MITs) designed specifically to increase smallholder farmers's productivity. We offer a range of products, including pumps, drip systems, micro sprinklers and water storage technologies which can be viewed in iDE’s product catalog.
iDE also implements an integrated value-chain development approach to capitalize on market opportunities, termed Prosperity Realized through Irrigation and Smallholder Markets (PRISM). iDE's Farm Business Advisor (FBA) model is an innovative approach for delivering high-quality agricultural inputs and technical advice to poor farmers through commission-based sales agents known as Farm Business Advisors. FBAs then sell products at a profit, often on credit with payment due at harvest, and provide technical advice as an embedded service during return visits throughout the growing season.
Water and sanitation
iDE has pioneered market-based approaches in the WASH sector that incorporate private-sector, NGO and government stakeholders. Our key strengths include:
market-based approaches to catalyze local private sector involvement
Addressing product, distribution, and business design through Human Centered Design
To date, iDE's work has impacted more than 20 million people and resulted in the commercial distribution of some 2.5 million irrigation technologies, which on average produce additional income of $150 per year. PRiSM enables income increases of $250 a year. Additionally, FBAs earn on average $640 per year, and their rural customers realize on average 30-40% income gains in the first year. iDE has also facilitated the sale of more than 300,000 WASH technologies, enabling over 1.5 million people to realize important health and financial benefits through improved access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.
iDE has received a number of awards. For more information, click here.
