The International Institute for Sustainable Development's mission is to promote human development and environmental sustainability through innovative research, communication and partnerships.
Established in 1990, IISD is an independent, non-profit organisation that provides practical solutions to the challenge of integrating environmental and social priorities with economic development. They report on international negotiations, conduct rigorous research, and engage citizens, businesses and policy-makers on the shared goal of developing sustainably.
The Institute champions sustainable development around the world through innovation, partnerships, research and communications. It is dedicated to ongoing communication of its findings as it engages decision-makers in business, government, non-government organizations and other sectors.
IISD is proud of its diverse, multi-talented team of over 100 staff and associates located in over 30 countries. Through their dynamic portfolio of projects and programs, the Institute has partnered with over 200 organizations worldwide. IISD has been ranked by sustainability experts as one of the most effective sustainable development research organizations in the world. As a registered charitable organization in Canada, the Institute has 501(c)(3) status in the U.S., IISD receives core operating support from the Government of Canada, as provided through the Canadian International Development Agency, the International Development Research Centre, Environment Canada and the Province of Manitoba. The Institute also receives project funding from numerous governments inside and outside Canada, United Nations agencies, foundations and the private sector.
