The Jamaica Pig farmers Association (JPFA) is a result of the combined effort of pig farmers and other industry players. They recognized the need for an organization that could provide leadership, advocacy in representing the industry at the national level as well as garnering resources for the development of pig farmers in Jamaica.
Today, the Association is a vibrant force, making a difference in the pig/port industry and making a contribution to agriculture and the economic development of the country.
The JPFA is a non-profit organization, with a mandate to lobby for the interests of pig farmers and the pig/pork industry. It aims to improve the quality of the product through partnerships, training and developing the knowledge and skills of its members. It is therefore involved in initiatives such as a project of Newport genetics (Nugen) – a member of the Caribbean Broilers Group. The project is geared to improving the breed stock by developing F1 Gilts, through Articitial Insemination (AI). The JPFA is facilitating the technology transfer to its members, so that over time there will be high quality local pork.
