Jan Sahas is a social and community based organization that is committed to protection of human rights and development of socially excluded communities through abolishing the all kind of slavery, social exclusion, atrocities and all forms of discrimination based on caste, class and gender and also promotion of community based institution, decent livelihood, education, food and nutrition security, land and agriculture development, building community based legal support system and empowerment of women.
Jan Sahas works on a range of issues to realize its mission. Jan Sahas started functioning in the year 2000 when it took up the issue of death of one child labour and two dalit labours in illegal unit of firecrackers. Few people united on the issue and Jan Sahas was born. On this backdrop a group of young volunteers decided to come together and form an organization, Jan Sahas Social Development Society, which focuses specifically on eradication of manual scavenging and other forms of bondage, land rights and agriculture development, skill development for decent livelihood and social entrepreneurship, legal aid and intervention in the cases of atrocity and violence against Dalit, Tribal and women, support in education, food and nutrition security, promotion of basic rights and entitlements, develop barefoot lawyers to build victim or survivors as leader and empowerment of communities though capacity and organization building.
The prime focused target groups of the organization is socially excluded communities like Dalit, Tribal, other excluded communities and especial emphasis on women and children. The organization is intensively working in 10 districts of Madhya Pradesh through networking, campaign and fellowship initiatives. Jan Sahas’ presence is in the rural and urban areas of other 100 districts of 5 states (Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar and Maharashtra) of India. Through its networking and collaborative initiatives the organization is involved in national and international level policy initiatives.
