Karuna Mission Social Solidarity (KMSS) is a faith based social network at the service of the Catholic Church of Myanmar. Inspired by the Catholic Social Teaching Principle of “Option for the Poor”, KMSS is established and mandated by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar (CBCM) as its social arm to serve the poor and the needy. The specific areas of the Church’s mission give attention to holistic human development, realization of Justice and Peace, environmental protection, humanitarian assistance and emergency relief service.
KMSS is a network of 16 Diocesan Offices (Dos) and a Yangon-based National Office (NO). The DOs play the key role in implementing multi-sectoral programming, while the NO provides a technical support and coordination role.
Since 2002 Karuna Myanmar Social Services, guided by the Social Teaching of the Church and mandated by CBCM, undertakes the Social Development activities in 16 Dioceses. It works in cooperation with faith based leaders, local authority, ethnic groups and community leaders at all levels. The main role of Karuna Myanmar is to coordinate with donors and Diocesan Karuna offices through local Church and to help Diocesan Karunas in enhancing the capacity of the local people with practical knowledge and skills, in uplifting the overall living standard of the poor and the marginalized regardless of creed and ethnicity through facilitating awareness training workshops, strengthening formal and informal education, fortifying health, and improving agricultural and livelihood opportunities.
Karuna Myanmar has been putting every effort to maximize the quality and the dignity of life of the poor and the needy.
KMSS has five focal areas of intervention in Education, Health, Livelihoods, Social Protection, DRR and Emergency. A number of dioceses will be targeted according to each focus area or sector. There will be the ongoing development and support in each sector of Sub-Committees whose members are from the NO and DO and who provide specific focus on the management, implementation, monitoring, etc of the proposed activities. Each of the Sub-Committees was established since 2011-2012 for the sector development of the KMSS Country Strategic Plan 2012.
