INTRODUCTION

At the inauguration of the Lagos State Science and Innovation Council on Monday, June 19, 2017, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode clearly articulated the fundamental deliverables expected from the Council. The major thrust, according to him, is to assist the State in its quest to transit to a Smart City through the application of Science and Information Technology. Therefore, the tasks before the Council are to:

  • Promote sustainability of science by boosting the teaching and learning of science at the elementary, secondary and tertiary institutions of learning. This requires effort to promote the awareness of science and its application to the younger generations in the primary and secondary schools in Lagos State;
  • Harness the potentials and ingenuity of Lagosians to address the challenges faced by the State through Science and Technology, thereby creating wealth and escalating socio-economic development;
  • Engage public and private institutions to identify areas where innovative research can help improve their activities; and
  • Manage the Research & Innovation Fund sets aside by the State Government to fund research activities.

RESPONSIBILITY

The primary responsibilities of the Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC) are:

  • To manage the Science Research and Innovation Fund which will be applied towards funding researches that have the potential to directly benefit the citizenry in terms of job and wealth creation.
  • To Promoting research and innovation activities in our public and private Institutions;
  • To Identify all research and innovation products that are bankable and translate such to commercial activities with a view to establishing small/medium scale industries
  • To Promote science education by organizing various scientific activities that will encourage the teaching and learning of STEM subjects in all our public schools as well as promoting science literacy among the members of the public. Such activities will include but not limited to Science fairs, boot camps, seminars, workshops etc.
  • To Identify creative and innovative ways to re-engineer the economy of the State.
