Legal Resources Foundation Trust (LRF) is a national civil society organization founded in 1993. Because of the restrictive registration challenges, LRF operated initially as a project of Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) until August 2000 when it was registered as a Trust under the Trustees (Perpetual Succession) Act Chapter 164, Laws of Kenya. LRFs registered office and headquarters is in Nairobi City County with regional offices in, Kapenguria, West Pokot County, and Isiolo County.
Vision
At LRF, they envision a just and equitable society. This vision depicts the state of the society, primarily within Kenya and beyond, that LRF as a human rights organization is working towards. The institutional vision of LRF is, therefore: “A premier catalyst institution for a just and equitable society."
Motto
Their Motto “Haki Itawale” has been adopted in the fight for Justice and equity. This is a Kiswahili (the main national language of Kenya) phrase whose English meaning is “Justice for all”. Through their vast network in the country, they aim to ensure justice for every Kenyan, despite their social, political, or economic status.
LRF Experience & Growth
LRF has grown from a small organisation running a street law project for schools into a leader in training of paralegals, production of human rights publications, and development of programmes that target to enhance access to justice for target communities. The programmatic operations are spread in 31 constituencies in Kenya. In pace with its growth patterns, LRF in 1999, 2003, and 2009 developed its first, second, and third Strategic Plans enabling it to shift from the previous project planning to programmatic approaches.
LRF is an integral part of the Kenyan civil society and a member of the National Civil Society Congress. Increasingly, LRF has also taken up regional ( East, Central and Western Africa) and international training and advocacy initiatives in matters of publications of human rights materials, curriculum development, and paralegal approach and consequently, sees itself as a critical civic voice in enhancing matters of access to justice.
