Lekela is a renewable power generation company which delivers utility-scale projects across Africa. They focus on wind and solar projects, taking these from mid or late-stage development into long-term operation.
Their goal is the delivery of sustainable, reliable and competitively-priced power to governments, utilities and large-scale industrial projects. Today this has become critical for many countries in Africa. While there is plenty of appetite to increase power generation there are often significant hurdles to doing so. Delivering a project successfully requires specialist knowhow on project financing, grid dynamics, wind and solar supply, environmental responsibility, risk mitigation and community relations.
Lekela was founded in 2015 to address these challenges. To do so, they draw on decades of energy experience held by their management team, and the heritage of their founder shareholders, Actis and Mainstream Renewable Power.
Today, their portfolio includes over 1,300 MW of projects in South Africa, Senegal, Egypt and Ghana. Their first wind farm, at Noupoort in South Africa, started providing energy to the grid less than 16 months after construction began. Two further projects in South Africa are also in operations, while construction will shortly start on Taiba N’Diaye: the first ever utility-scale wind farm in Senegal. Their projects in Ghana and Egypt continue to advance towards construction as well.
Their work is not only about providing electricity though. Central to their strategy is a focus on creating long-term value for the communities where they operate.
At every site where they operate, they aim to make a positive impact that lasts for generations. The provision of renewable power and associated employment opportunities form part of this, but they also focus on promoting education, enterprise and environmental initiatives. This work is integrated to each power project and driven by a dedicated Lekela employee.
Ultimately, their vision is to be the go-to platform for clean power delivery in African countries.
