The Lemur Rescue Center set up by the NGO Reniala is the first and only rescue center for ring-tailed lemurs or Lemur catta in Madagascar. The Lemur Rescue Center works to welcome the Lemurs seized by the Malagasy authorities, to treat them and to get them used to the wildlife again. It is illegal to keep or transport lemurs in Madagascar. They are often found as pets or as bushmeat.
The Reniala NGO aims to protect the forests of the Reniala reserve, rehabilitate lemurs from the bushmeat and pet trade at the Lemur Rescue Center, and develop alternative livelihood projects such as beekeeping. Reniala NGO’s Lemur Rescue Center is funded and facilitated in part by Lemur Love.
