Since the founding of LTS in 1973, they have worked with both public and private sectors and they have seen numerous changes and challenges. Over the years, many ‘current issues’ have required us to look to the past to understand how to best address the core issues in development: economics, building capacity, re-shaping policies, empowering the poorest. They have a strong and extensive history in each of these areas.
LTS have 37 years of global experience and a dynamic in-house team of experts committed to learning from experiences and translating those lessons into current client contexts. They also know how to put current thinking into practice, making it work. LTS is known as a real “do-tank”; a leader in implementing best practice in the field.
The growing recognition of the importance of tropical forests and climate systems and REDD+ has created new momentum in the fight against tropical deforestation. REDD+ will offer financial incentives to developing countries who protect and restore their forests. LTS appreciates that REDD+ differs from previous forest conservation attempts as longer term finance is expected to be “results-based” – i.e. based on reduced emissions from deforestation or forest degradation, sucessful management and conservation of forests and enhancement forest carbon stocks.
Responding to public concerns on the issue of illegal logging and deforestation, in 2003, the European Commission adopted the EU Action Plan for FLEGT. The key regions and countries targeted, which together contain nearly 60% of the world’s forest and supply a large proportion of internationally traded timber, are places familiar to LTS - Central Africa, Russia, Tropical South America and Southeast Asia.
As a company, LTS fully supports the ambitious goals of FLEGT to enable legitimate operators who are trying to manage forests sustainably to better compete with illegally produced timber, and to promote strengthened forest governance so that policies to conserve and sustainably manage forests become more effective.
LTS recognises climate change to be a serious long term threat to societies and their sustainable development. The impacts of climate change and variability are expected to seriously and disproportionately affect the world’s poor people whom are most vulnerable.
Private individuals and the corporate sector incorporate the principles of M&E in their everyday efforts to achieve effective management of their resources. LTS appreciates that international development partners are now keener than ever to demonstrate the impact, achievements and progress of their programmes to their national and international constituencies. The success of investments, programmes and projects is greatly enhanced by the planned and rigorous application of M&E tools within the management cycle.
LTS International provides specialised consulting services to the water sector through intelligent and innovative approaches that are grounded in extensive knowledge and practical understanding. The research and development activities mean they can bring to the client state of the art responses and a broad professional practice. An obvious benefit of this approach is that they can catalyze innovative responses to complex interdisciplinary natural resource management challenges through a team based approach.
Never before has the interface between environment and society been such a key determinant for economic development. LTS has built a team of multi-ecosystem specialists who are able to provide technical expertise at the ecosystem and landscape level. They take integrated approaches that deliver development benefits to the poor.
