About

Madécasse Chocolate is single origin Madagascar which means that the entire product “from tree to bean to bar to wrapper” is beneficiated on the island of Madagascar. This enables the Malagasy communities involved in farming and production to earn as much as four times more impact than fair trade cocoa alone.

Madécasse comes with a positive story of African upliftment, and its trade-based model is making a real difference to alleviate poverty, provide electricity, and educate children, whilst promoting self-esteem and dignity among those involved.

The company is owned by two young Americans, Brett Beach and Tim McCollum;they met as Peace Corps volunteers in Madagascar - the potential-rich but financially-poor country off the east coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Throughout their years there, the two were involved in a number of efforts to aid Malagasy farmers and producers in maximizing their revenue, and launched their own initiative to correct the economic drain inherent in the current system of growing and exporting cocoa. Made from the top 1% of the worlds' cocoa. They have facilitated training farmers to not just harvest, but to dry and process cocoa beans, and created a market for local factories to make and sell fine chocolate to the US.

Creating change through chocolate starts in one small village, in a remote corner of Madagascar, 50km from the nearest road or telephone. This is the home of the Ezaka Cooperative. And this is where our cocoa comes from. It’s a unique partnership, where we travel by oxcart to work with them, share their table for meals, and together produce a unique style of cocoa. Through this relationship, and your purchases of our chocolate, we provide Ezaka with training, equipment and a stable market. And Ezaka provides us with cocoa, and a constant reminder of why we started this business.
