About

Marie Stopes Uganda (MS Uganda) is the largest, most specialised, private family planning and reproductive health organisation in Uganda.

For over 20 years, Marie Stopes Uganda has been working to provide voluntary family planning services to millions of men, women and young people across the country. The team works in every district of Uganda and provides approximately 36% of all modern contraception, often in hard-to-reach and remote areas.

MS Uganda is a key implementing partner of the Ministry of Health and receives funding from USAID, DFID, UNFPA, the Dutch Government, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and several private foundations.

MSU practices a total market approach by providing free services to the rural poor, at subsidy to the peri-urban and through user fees to urban and middle income clients. MSU is significantly contributing to the contraceptive prevalence rate in Uganda through various channels including; 29 Mobile clinical outreach teams, 400 socially franchised clinics under the BlueStar Healthcare Network, 15 Static Centers, 2,000 Village Health Teams and 75 Dedicated FP/RH service providers at select public facilities. MSU also reaches the urban poor through 4 mini-outreach teams on tri-cycle vehicles to provide HIV/SRH services to most-at-risk populations and young people affected by HIV.

MSU has Uganda’s longest running social marketing program of health products such as Life Guard condoms and Misoclear, the MSU brand of Misoprostol used to prevent post-partum hemorrhage. We have also implemented demand side financing through a voucher scheme since 2004 to provide equity of quality services by targeting the most marginalised. MSU operates a toll-free SRH Hotline across the country to provide more personalised information and services in 16 languages of Uganda.
