About

The Marine Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organisation. They recognise and reward efforts to protect oceans and safeguard seafood supplies for the future.

They want future generations to be able to enjoy seafood and oceans full of life, forever.

VISION

Their vision is of the world’s oceans teeming with life, and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations.

MISSION

Their mission is to use their ecolabel and fishery certification program to contribute to the health of the world’s oceans by recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices, influencing the choices people make when buying seafood and working with their partners to transform the seafood market to a sustainable basis.

PROGRAMS

Ocean Stewardship Fund

The Ocean Stewardship Fund aims to increase the number of sustainable fisheries worldwide. They are accelerating progress by funding innovative research and supporting fisheries at all stages on the path to sustainability.

They have committed 5% of annual royalties from MSC certified product sales to the Ocean Stewardship Fund.

They are now expanding the fund by combining the MSC's contributions with external funding from third-party donors. They have an ambition to raise a total of £7.4 million (US$10 million) by the end of 2022 and have already mobilised over £2.3 million (or US$3.2 million) from both sources.
