The foundation: 1979
MediaMarkt was founded in 1979 by the four entrepreneurs Leopold Stiefel, Walter Gunz, Erich Kellerhal and Helga Kellerhals in Munich. Their idea was the establishment of a large-scale electric market as a counterpart to electrical retailers and the mail order business. In 1990, the expansion first began in neighboring countries. More than 800 stores in 14 countries around the world make MediaMarkt the undisputed number one consumer electronics retailer in Europe.
Successful in Switzerland since 1994:
In Switzerland, MediaMarkt opened its first stores in Dietikon and Dietlikon in 1994. In 1996, the first store in Western Switzerland opened in Crissier. In Grancia, the first MediaMarkt in Ticino opened its doors in 1997. All in all, MediaMarkt has 28 stores in Switzerland, 19 of them in German-speaking countries, 7 in French-speaking Switzerland, and 2 in Ticino
