About

The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center is one of the leading academic cancer research centers in the United States. It is located in Indianapolis on the IU School of Medicine campus.

At the IU Simon Cancer Center, more than 200 scientists conduct research from five different programs.  The goals of those programs range from understanding the molecular changes that cause cancer to developing targeted therapies to prevent and treat cancer.

Each year, their physician-researchers lead more than 600 active clinical trials for pediatric and adult cancers.

Their researchers have made protocol-defining discoveries that have changed the way doctors treat testicular cancer, breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, genitourinary cancer, leukemia, multiple myeloma, thymoma and thymic carcinomas, and thoracic cancer.

The researchers at the IU Simon Cancer Center are primarily faculty of the IU School of Medicine. They also include researchers from the IU School of Nursing, Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame.

The IU Simon Cancer Center is Indiana’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center that provides patient care, and is one of only 69 in the nation. The NCI-designated Cancer Centers Program recognizes centers around the country that meet rigorous criteria for world-class, state-of-the-art programs in multidisciplinary cancer research. These centers put significant resources into developing research programs, faculty and facilities that will lead to better approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The NCI designation not only recognizes excellence but opens doors to greater federal funding, information sharing and resources.

Through their partnership with Indiana University Health, cancer patients benefit from the scientific discoveries made at the IU Simon Cancer Center. IU Health provides multidisciplinary clinical care for adults with cancer at IU Health Simon Cancer Center and for children at Riley Hospital at IU Health.

Many IU Simon Cancer Center researchers are both scientists and physicians.
