In the year 1981 and from the Switzerland of Turrialba, Cartago, Mr. Nelson Méndez Chaves, decides to install a small block factory, in Agua Caliente, Cartago, place of residence of the family that he formed together with his wife, Mrs. Damaris Calderón González.

This is how he ventured into the construction market, with this activity that lasted approximately fifteen years. Already by this time, Don Nelson had the collaboration of his eldest son, Mr. Giovanni Méndez Calderón, who was dedicated to study and as an economic contribution to his family sold times in the neighborhood.

Don Nelson acquires a small piece of land next to his house, and moves the block machines to the latter, then his youngest son, Mr. Diego Méndez Calderón, joins the family business with the development of the block, in the company of other collaborators; the first truck is acquired to transport the material and sand and cement are put on sale.

In the year of 1991, the family decided to start the construction of their new house, in the same lot of the block factory, for this Don Nelson acquired construction materials in Cartago, and stored them in the house they lived, curiously the people who came to buy the block, for their constructions, offered to buy the materials. Don Nelson no longer only supplied himself with the materials he would use at home, but also brought orders to his clients.

Once they moved to the new house, the previous one was used as a warehouse and in a small room a desk was placed, a small shelf with merchandise and thus began with the hardware store.

This is how Don Nelson and his son Diego attended the business, while Don Giovanni began his studies in Business Administration at the ITCR, to then become the company's administrator.

When entering this new project successfully, the managers are in need, to build facilities according to the requirements that the activity demanded them.

This is how MERCASA was born, a company that currently has more than 100 employees, women and men who provide their effort and dedication in various areas, in order to overcome and build day by day, this project, which once started as a simple idea, to then become a reality.

Likewise, the company has vehicular units, which allow it to offer a better service to the client and greater efficiency when transporting the products from the suppliers to the premises.

The physical facilities are another element that has made a difference, since the managers have invested resources in the construction of better infrastructure, which has allowed them to diversify their operations and supply not only the residents of the place, but also people from different parts, public institutions and hardware stores nearby.

All this with the use of an ideology of constant growth, for the benefit of all those people who in one way or another form the MERCASA group.
