HISTORY

In 1979, from Ciurel Depot, the first subway train departed for the Semanatoarea (Petrache Poenaru) station. The event, which marked the operation of the subway - "experimental with the public" - took place after five years of laborious work and other decades in which the problem of building a subway in Bucharest was raised by specialists repeatedly.

The idea of building a subway in Bucharest dates from the beginning of the 20th century, when the young student Dimitrie Leonida advanced the idea of building such a means of transport in the capital. At that time, the capital of Romania had not reached the flow of over 600,000 passengers per day, currently provided by the four existing buses, but solving the public transport did not have to attract the attention and, moreover, not to cause the specialists to seek solutions. Thus, between 1934 and 1936, the idea of carrying out underground public transport lines with trains or electric trams was also developed.

The years around the Second World War brought to the attention of the ediles, as well as the public opinion, the necessity of building the subway in Bucharest. At that time, the plans of the subway provided for the construction of three lines. Thus, the NORD-SUD line had a length of 8.2 km and had to unite the Hippodrome (Presei Libere Square area) with Calea Rahovei on the route Victoriei Square - Romanian Square - National Square.
