The Ministry of Basic Education is responsible for the formulation and implementation of the Government's policy on basic education.
As such, is responsible for:
- The organization and operation of nursery and primary education;
- The design and determination of educational programs and the monitoring of their implementation;
- Studies and research on the most appropriate methods for basic education;
- The development of management and evaluation principles for establishments at this level of education
- Moral, civic and intellectual training for children of school age, in conjunction with the Ministry of Youth and Civic Education;
- The design and dissemination of standards, rules and procedures for the assessment of learners;
- Monitoring and control of the administrative and educational management of public and private establishments at this level of education;
- The development and monitoring of the implementation of the school map for this level of education;
- The development, analysis and maintenance of statistics for this level of education;
- From the book policy of this level of education;
- The fight against illiteracy;
- Monitoring of private nursery and primary establishments of secular and denominational education;
- Monitoring the construction of school buildings and infrastructure at this level of education;
- Monitoring the activities of parents' associations and teachers (APEE);
- Management and continuous training of teaching and auxiliary staff subject to the attributions devolved to other Ministerial Departments.
It liaises between the Government and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in conjunction with the Ministry of Arts and Culture and the Ministry of External Relations.
