A Local Government Department
- Financing, controlling and inspecting authority to establish local government and village administration
- Administration of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), the Directorate of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), the Water Supply and Irrigation Authority (WASA) and the National Institute of Local Government (NILG).
- Monitor and oversee all programs run by the above agencies.
- Fresh water matters.
- Development of rural water supply, sanitation and sanitation system.
- Development, maintenance and management of upazila roads, union roads and village roads, including bridges and culverts allotted by the Government from time to time.
- Development and management of development centers and other markets connected by upazilas, unions and village roads.
- Development, maintenance and management of small water resources projects to the extent determined by the Government.
The history of local government in Bangladesh shows that different companies have been established at different times, governments have been established at different times. Within time, laws / ordinances have been created for the formation of local bodies at village, thana, district and divisional level. After the establishment, local government institutions often change their functions and responsibilities.
