Ministry of Mines and Quarries (Burkina Faso) (MMCE)
About

Until 1984 activities in the mining and energy sectors were divided between the following ministries:

  • the Ministry of Trade, Industrial Development and Mines, for mining activities;
  • the Ministry of Public Works with regard to the electrical energy component;
  • the Ministry of the Environment had under its management the subsector of traditional energies (wood energy).

The mining activities will be entrusted in 1984 to the Ministry of Economic Promotion which had just been created. In 1989, with the boom experienced by the mining sector in a few years (reopening of old mines like Poura, creation of the CBMP, the Project of the gold sector ...), will be created within the Ministry of Economic Promotion, a State Secretary for Mines).

In 1992, a Ministry Delegate in Charge of Energy was created to define an energy policy of the country. The Ministry will be abolished in 1993 during a government reorganization.

In 1995, a Ministry of Energy and Mines was created to deal with the problems related to the management and development of the energy and mining sectors.

In 1999, to highlight energy activities, a state energy secretariat will be created within the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

In 2000, in order to focus on quarry activity, the Ministry of Energy and Mines will become the Ministry of Mines, Careers and Energy with two Directorates General: DGMGC and DGE.
