The Minister of the Interior and Decentralization has the general mission of developing and implementing general state policy, led by the Government, in matters of Deconcentration and Territorial Administration, decentralization and local development, preservation of public order, civil protection and public liberties.

In this context, he is responsible in particular for:

• Ensure the representation and effective permanence of the State throughout the national territory;
  develop and implement government policy on decentralization and deconcentration;
  
• work for the effectiveness and efficiency of the territorial administration;
  contribute to the preservation of public order;
  
• ensuring civil protection, coordination of emergency relief activities, risk and disaster reduction and management of aid in the event of cataclysms promote and strengthen the free administration of local and regional authorities and ensure that the
• legality of their acts is respected; develop and enforce the rules guaranteeing citizens the exercise of public freedoms; promote democracy and civil society, in particular associations, NGOs and political parties;
  
• provide support in the organization of elections and popular consultations, in accordance with the laws and regulations in force
• promote effective decentralization and good local governance;
  
• work for the establishment and operation of the territorial public service;
  
• to study, in conjunction with the other interested ministries, questions relating to the organization and functioning of the national civil status system;
  
• exercise the powers relating to the mission of State sovereignty, which are attributed to it by the legislation in force;
  
• design and propose draft legislative and regulatory texts in the areas of devolution, decentralization and elections;
