About

The Ministry of Water was created in July 2008 after the holding of the African Union Summit in Egypt.

Set up as a single Directorate before this date, the Water and Sanitation management has been placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

The new attributions of the Ministry of Water, now the Ministry of Water, Energy and Hydrocarbons, as well as its general organization, are set by Decree No. 2017- 148 and Decree No. 2017-262 of 20 April 2017. The search for a better quality of life for the population, in a climate of serenity and respect for human rights, considers access to drinking water as one of the fundamental priorities of every human being.

The Minister of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene deals with the design, management, coordination, harmonization and implementation of the National Development Plan (PND) and the General Government Policy (GGP) in the sector of water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Missions

The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene is responsible for:
  • mobilize citizens and financial partners for better management of water resources;
  • strengthen the efficiency of the Administration and partners, particularly in terms of drinking water supply and energy;
  • raise awareness for changing mental health attitudes, behaviors and habits;
  • develop synergy with the other Ministries and sectors concerned, for a better health of the population with a view to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (SDGs).
It coordinates all the activities of the sector and ensures the official and priority referent of the actors.
