Money Trail
About

Money Trail is a collaborative project between highly regarded journalism and training organizations – Finance Uncovered, Free Press Unlimited, Journalismfund.eu – and Oxfam Novib.

Conducting and delivering journalistic illicit finance investigations is often long, difficult and complex. It can even be dangerous. It can take courage to even start researching these stories.

Money Trail delivers practical skills and tools for journalists and activists all over the world who want to investigate tax abuse, money laundering and corruption.

Run by Finance Uncovered and Free Press Unlimited, their six financial investigation courses over three years will also include a comprehensive digital security component.

Money Trail bursaries cover the costs of flights, hotels and daily subsistence and are available for qualifying journalists and civil society activists. Training takes place in London, Abuja and Jakarta.

In addition, through Journalismfund.eu, Money Trail also offers working grants to mixed teams of African, Asian and European journalists to investigate cross-border illicit financial flows, tax abuse and corruption in Africa, Asia and Europe. Grants are awarded to journalists solely by Journalismfund.eu, with no input or oversight at any stage from the consortium as a whole.

Civil society activists will receive separate Money Trail training on illicit finance and campaign tactics by Oxfam Novib.

Money Trail exists because countries throughout the world lose billions of dollars through tax abuse, money laundering and grand corruption. Investigative journalism is key to combatting this situation. Such work clearly can have tremendous impact. Brilliant reporting by journalists and some notable civil society organizations has resulted in revenue authorities and enforcement agencies recovering desperately needed funds. Politicians have been forced to act.

But there are so many more stories all over the world yet to be told. This is your chance to help tell them.
