The MoneyGram Foundation provides vital learning resources to children and offers immediate crisis aid in some of the world’s hardest-to-reach communities to foster economic prosperity, health, individual empowerment and freedom -- on a global scale.
The MoneyGram Foundation was inspired by MoneyGram International's 70-year history of providing a global financial services network used by millions around the world to secure food and housing, higher education, and other life's essentials for their families. Motivated by customers and employees driven to create these new and better opportunities for their loved ones, they established their "Global Giving" program.
The program resulted in about $500,000 in annual grants given between 2006 and 2012 to worldwide nonprofit organizations providing basic needs, microfinance programs, essential education services and disaster relief. They supported life-saving programs for children in Africa and the Middle East, provided school supplies for children in Romania and the Philippines, and offered aid to those impacted by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, among other initiatives. But they were further inspired.
In 2012, they officially established the MoneyGram Foundation and their mission of enabling children worldwide to gain better access to learning resources and facilities while also providing relief and support in times of crisis. They have since awarded funding to more than 45 organizations, have reached 40 countries, and - combined with the "Global Giving" program - they have given more than $5 million worldwide.
Through grants given to organizations whose missions mirror theirs, they are making a transformative impact on global prosperity, health and an improved livelihood over the long-term - not just for individual children, but for entire families and their larger, worldwide community.
Inspired by their customers and employees
Economic prosperity, individual freedom, health, empowerment: it all starts with early education. Yet as many as 63 million school-age children lack access to vital learning tools. That’s where the MoneyGram Foundation takes action. From providing essential learning resources to offering aid during crisis, they are igniting positive change in some of the world’s hardest-to-reach communities.
They award grants to vetted, impactful organizations that provide school supplies, books, uniforms, innovative technology, educational programs and new facilities to students in the most underserved areas, and provide relief to organizations that can help in immediate times of crisis following natural disasters or catastrophic events, which often destroy entire schools and whole communities.
Their grants span the globe from New York to Columbia, Poland to Egypt, Kenya to Nepal, and India to Australia. They have built schools in Nepal following a devastating earthquake, funded the expansion of a literary program in Haiti, sponsored the expansion of an e-reader program in Ghana, and supported mobile science labs traveling throughout India. In 2015 alone, they funded after-school and educational support programs for more than 950 students and training for more than 800 teachers.
