About

Teresina

Capital of Piauí, Teresina is located in the Center-North of the State, 366 km from the coast. With a particular history, it was the first planned Brazilian capital, still during the reign of D. Pedro II.

The city has 1,392 km ² of extension and 830 thousand inhabitants. Affectionately known as Cidade Verde, Teresina received this nickname from the writer Coelho Neto, due to having streets and avenues interspersed with trees. The model of the city, typical of the colonial period, resembles a chessboard, reason that facilitates the locomotion.

Standing out in the service sector, the capital attracts thousands of people seeking advanced medical treatments and also find here some of the best doctors in the country. Another area that thrives is education, with an advanced education network.

With a semi-humid tropical climate and high temperatures, Teresina has two characteristic seasons: the rainy season (which occurs in summer and fall) and the dry season (which occurs in winter and spring).

To know

One of the most visited tourist spots in the city is the Environmental Park of the Encounter of Waters, located in the North zone, where the rivers Parnaíba and Poti unite and transform into a single bed towards the Atlantic Ocean. In the place is still possible to find the rich crafts of Teresina, with potters who produce decorative, religious and functional pieces of clay removed from the own bed. Also in the Environmental Park of the Meeting of Waters was erected a monument that illustrates the famous personage of the local folklore, the Head of Cuia.

In addition to the Environmental Park of the Encontro das Águas, Teresina offers its visitors beautiful tourist attractions such as the João Luís Ferreira Metallic Bridge, the São Benedito Church, the Piauí Museum, the Dom Paulo Libório Museum of Sacred Art, João Isidoro França, Theatro 4 de Setembro, Pedro II Square, the Craft Center Mestre Dezinho and Parque Lagoas do Norte.

Story

Teresina began to be settled in the seventeenth century, with Domingos Jorge Velho and a group of bandeirantes, who established a trading post and a cattle ranch. In 1797 was erected the church of Our Lady of the Amparo, and its foundation was made official in 16 of August of 1852.

With an innovative creation project, developed by José Antônio Saraiva - Counselor Saraiva, Teresina became the capital of the province due to its more central location, as well as the navigability of the Poti and Parnaíba rivers.

The name of the city was a tribute to the Empress Teresa Cristina Maria of Bourbon, that would have been the mediator next to the emperor Dom Pedro II so that the capital would become Teresina.
