The Empresa Nacional de Electricidad SA - ENDE was created by Supreme Decree No. 0599 of February 9, 1962, through which the creation of the Bolivian Development Corporation was entrusted. His organization materialized as a result of the credit negotiations with the World Bank, which began in November 1962 and ended in August 1964. The loan was granted under the condition of establishing a national body responsible for the development of the electricity sector. in the country in areas not served by private companies.

ENDE was created as a public service institution, with an indefinite duration, to fulfill the specific role of production, transmission and distribution of electrical energy, planning, construction and operation of electric companies owned and developed by any activity included in the electrical industry in areas where it does not exist or the service is inadequate.

ENDE was initially organized as a limited company with the exclusive participation of the State, with legal status recognized by Supreme Resolution No. 127462 of February 4, 1965, which was ratified by Supreme Decree No. 7591 of April 20, 1966. Dividends by the capital They were compulsorily reinvested in the company. The General Shareholders' Meeting was the highest authority of this company, while the Board established the general lines of business policy. The administration of ENDE was constituted by a general manager, appointed by the Shareholders' Meeting and 5 area managers.

ENDE started its supply operations in 1967, when the Corani Hydroelectric Plant was put into service, with 27,000 KW and the Corani - Cochabamba - Catavi transmission line. This work allowed him to adequately attend the departments of Cochabamba and the central area of COMIBOL (Oruro and Norte de Potosí).

In the following 10 years (1967-1977), ENDE expands its energy sales services to the departments of Santa Cruz, Sucre and Potosí, through the installation of power plants and transmission lines of its ownership, and contributes to the organization and strengthening of the electricity distribution companies in the country, being a shareholder of the distribution companies of Cochabamba, Tarija, Potosí and Sucre.

Since 1980, ENDE operates the National Interconnected System that includes the systems of La Paz, Oruro, Cochabamba, Sucre and Potosí.

In August 1985, the government ordered the dissolution of the Bolivian Development Corporation, which until then had 80.7% of the shares of ENDE. These actions, by virtue of Supreme Decree No. 21060, are transferred to the State.

In 1991, ENDE began operations in Pando, so it is present in the nine departments of our country.

The development of ENDE until 1995 was characterized, according to World Bank reports, by an accelerated expansion of its generation and transmission facilities as a result of the incorporation of new systems and the growth of existing ones. An important contribution was made in the evaluation of the hydroenergy and geothermal resources of the country, the electrical integration of the most important production and consumption centers, as well as the attention of the largest isolated electrical systems.

An essentially business administration, managed with technical and economic criteria, with a rational use of human resources and official stability (6 general managers, in more than 30 years, all of them ENDE professionals), offered positive economic and financial results in all the years of operation and capture of important financial resources from abroad, in the form of loan and non-reimbursable assistance. The proper management of the company and the results achieved, placed ENDE as an efficient company in the state context.
