About

Chartered by Congress in 1984, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) sustains, restores and enhances the nation's fish, wildlife, plants and habitats. Working with federal, corporate and individual partners, NFWF has funded more than 4,000 organizations and committed more than $2.1 billion to conservation projects.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) protects and restores the nation’s wildlife and habitats. Chartered by Congress in 1984, NFWF directs public conservation dollars to the most pressing environmental needs and matches those investments with private contributions. NFWF works with government, nonprofit and corporate partners to find solutions for the most intractable conservation challenges.

How NFWF Works

NFWF specializes in bringing all parties to the table – individuals, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and corporations. They protect and restore imperiled species, promote healthy oceans and estuaries, improve working landscapes for wildlife, advance sustainable fisheries and conserve water for wildlife and people. NFWF currently works with 15 federal partners and more than 45 corporateand foundation partners.

The Foundation's IDEA (Impact-Directed Environmental Account) program manages a nationwide portfolio of accounts arising from legal and regulatory actions involving natural resources and the environment; in the aggregate, these accounts exceed $170 million designated in each case for specific purposes benefitting natural resources and the environment.

NFWF is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They are governed by a 30-member Board of Directors approved by the Secretary of the Interior.

Conservation Programs

Their conservation programs cover many ecosystems and address challenges in oceans and coasts, forests and grasslands and freshwater environments.

Grants

NFWF provides funding on a competitive basis to projects that sustain, restore, and enhance the nation's fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats.

Each of their initiatives has a business plan developed by scientists and other experts and approved by the Board of Directors. Grants are available to support the actions identified in the business plan.
