Measurement matters
As the UK’s National Measurement Laboratory, responsible for chemical and bio-measurement, they form part of the core measurement infrastructure for the UK. They hold two unique roles, funded by UK government: UK's Designated Institute for chemical and bio-measurement and UK Government Chemist.
While everyone depends on robust, steadfast chemical and biological measurements – from reliable medical diagnostics to forensics and monitoring the safety of food and water – few people are aware of them.
Their internationally recognised scientists develop the fundamental measurement science to support manufacture and trade, protect consumers, promote skills development and enhance quality of life.
They partner with government, academia and industry to provide the expertise and knowledge to improve chemical and bio-measurements, resulting in reliable, trusted and proven answers to the most complex scientific issues.
They play a leading role internationally to standardise measurements across the world. So that they can all trust food is correctly labelled with no hidden allergens and medicines heal without unexpected side effects.
Through their research in advanced therapeutics, clinical diagnostics and safety and security, they provide unique measurement solutions to underpin some of the biggest challenges of their time, including neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, anti-microbial resistance, food safety and global terrorism.
Their measurement research, calibration facilities, reference materials and training programmes are available to help unravel and solve the most complex global biological and chemical challenges.
