About

The National Organization of Peer Educators (NOPE) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with operations in the East African region. Nope was registered in Kenya in 2001 and attained international mandate in 2007. Nope envisions’ a world with healthy communities and sustained social development and is on a mission to build the capacity of communities and organizations for delivery of quality health and social services. NOPE also provides Technical Assistance (TA) to organizations that run behavioral programs in Tanzania, The republic of Southern Sudan, Uganda, Punt Land, Sierra Leone and Liberia.  NOPE largely operates on 3 broad strategic pillars: Health Policy and Services, Livelihoods and Economic Empowerment and Growth and Development in 12 satellite offices across the Country.

NOPE has benefited from the US Government’s investment in building local capacity and promoting local ownership. For instance, NOPE has been a direct beneficiary of organizational and technical capacity building supported by USAID and CDC through FHI 360, John Snow Inc. (JSI) and Management Sciences for Health (MSH). Under PEPFAR’s New Partners Initiative (NPI) NOPE received a grant of US$5.6 million from CDC and organizational and technical capacity building from JSI through TA-NPI (2009-2012). NOPE strengthened systems, structures and policies in human resources, finance and procurement. From 2012 to 2014, NOPE was one of the top 10 local civil society organizations selected to benefit from Institutional strengthening and programmatic grants under the USAID FANIKISHA Institutional strengthening Initiative led by MSH, enabling it to sub-grant and build capacity of 7 CSOs.

With 50 fulltime employees, NOPE has a solid, functional and transparent governance and management structure headed by an Executive Director under an Oversight Board, supported by a senior management team. NOPE employs a pool of staff with technical expertise in health and social programs. NOPE has capably managed annual budgets of up to $3,000,000 through sound financial, administrative and procurement systems backed by strengthened and tested procedures and guidelines manuals. Annual institutional and donor compliance audits are conducted by reputable audit firms. Finance staff have undergone training on USG granting and compliance guidelines.
