SENASA maintains a Phytosanitary and Zoosanitary Surveillance system, which protects the country from the entry of pests and diseases that are not found in Peru. In addition to a quarantine system of plant and animal pests, in places where there are import operations.
SENASA develops the National Programs of Fruit Flies, Biological Control and Foot-and-Mouth Disease. It has twenty-five deconcentrated bodies, a central office in the city of Lima and peripherals in the seaport of Callao and the Jorge Chávez International Airport.
Today, the modernization of the Diagnostic Centers for Plant Health and Animal Health, the Center for the Production of Sterile Fruit Flies, and the Center for the Development of Methods of Production of Entomopathogens is a reality.
SENASA, provides the services of inspection, verification and phytosanitary and zoosanitary certification, diagnoses, identifies and provides biological controllers. It also registers and controls pesticides, seeds and nurseries; likewise, veterinary medicines, animal feed, importers, manufacturers, points of sale and professionals in charge and issue licenses for the internment of agricultural products.
Fruit flies are one of the biggest problems of the world fruit industry, especially Ceratitis capitata and Anastrepha spp. That cause sanitary problems in the production, quality and commercialization of fruits and in the national and international markets.
