The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) is an autonomous State agency, operating under the National Standards Authority of Ireland Act 1996, responsible to the Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
NSAI publishes Irish Standards, provides a comprehensive service of Product and Management certification, and operates the Legal Metrology service on behalf of the Minister. Irish Standards are voluntary and include a large number of harmonized European and international standards. They are the national certification authority for CE Marking and provide a certification service to enable business demonstrate that Irish goods and services conform to applicable standards.
In addition to domestic responsibilities, NSAI represents Ireland in European and international standards and measurement bodies. The purpose of this international activity is to work with others to develop consistent international written standards and measurements, which in turn can help ensure fair trade.
Functions
NSAI is involved in a diverse range of activities which are coordinated by sub-groups within the organization:
NSAI Certification
NSAI Certification creates, maintains and promotes accredited certification of products, services and organisations for compliance with recognised standards, from business management systems to product approvals.
NSAI Agrement
NSAI Agrément issues technical certification for new and innovative products and processes, in building and materials technology.
NSAI Inc.
NSAI Inc. offers certification expertise to US and global clients, with particular focus on the medical devices industry.
NSAI Standards
NSAI Standards is responsible for the development, including representing Irish interests in the development of European and International standards, publication and sale of standards.
NSAI Legal Metrology Service
LMS uphold and enforce accuracy and transparency in trade measures by certifying and inspecting measuring instruments used by traders and by inspecting pre-packaged goods to ensure correct quantity. NSAI LMS also operates a calibration service for weights and volume measures.
NSAI National Metrology Laboratory
NML offer a range of calibration services including, acoustics, electricity, force, humidity, length, mass, pressure, temperature, time and frequency, and torque. NML maintain national reference standards for a range of measurement units, and ensure NSAI standards are traceable and acceptable for international use.
NSAI Calibration Training
