About

While New Jersey City University throughout its history has held fast to its founding principles of access and excellence, it has grown and evolved over the years to become the institution of great opportunity that it is today.

Chartered in 1927, what is now New Jersey City University opened in 1929 as the New Jersey State Normal School at Jersey City. It was renamed New Jersey State Teachers College at Jersey City in 1935 and Jersey City State College in 1958 before adopting its present-day status and name in 1998.

New Jersey City University provides students the best of many worlds: small classes led by world-class faculty mentors, a broad array of high-quality undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and the lowest tuition offered by a four-year public university in the state of New Jersey—all on a thriving campus in bustling, cosmopolitan Jersey City.

NJCU is a vibrant place to live and learn, with students and faculty from around the world; welcoming, comfortable residence halls; a robust Greek system; a wide variety of student organizations and athletics programs that create a vibrant campus outside of academics; and support services for veterans, international students and others with unique needs. Beyond campus, students from NJCU have opportunities to explore the world and gain invaluable, hands-on experience through study abroad and internships in the most in-demand fields.

Most importantly, their school of business and colleges of arts and sciences, education, and professional studies provide their students with a world-class, interdisciplinary education—challenging them to grow as critical thinkers, to expand their knowledge and develop skills that will serve them well beyond their time at NJCU. Gothic Knights graduate ready to lead, ready to succeed, and ready to rise to the top of their respective fields.
